Start with the supplied finish

Timber Balustrades panels are supplied in natural LOSP-treated pine, unpainted and unprimed. Painting is arranged separately by the customer. A photograph of a white verandah shows a finished appearance; it does not add painting to your panel order.

Before booking installation, ask who will prepare and coat the timber, where that work will happen and how the panels will be stored while the coatings dry. Making those decisions early helps avoid fitting a panel before its hidden surfaces have been addressed.

Read the instructions for your actual timber

Heritage’s published LOSP preparation guide calls for keeping the product dry, waiting at least 72 hours after delivery, then applying two thin oil-based primer coats to all six sides before installation. It also calls for compatible topcoats and annual inspection. These are Heritage’s instructions: confirm the current written requirements for your supplied product and the coating system with the supplier and your painter.

Treatment and painting perform different jobs. Do not assume that treated timber can simply be left unfinished indefinitely, or that a coat of paint changes the timber’s treatment specification. Ask for the relevant material and care information with your quote.

Discuss the places a brush cannot reach later

Look at the panel as a collection of faces and connections. The back of a rail, the underside of a bottom rail and the ends near a post may become difficult to access once fitted. Decorative inserts add narrow edges and recesses. Ask the painter and installer to agree the preparation sequence before the panel is fixed.

For an assembled panel, ask the supplier how concealed joints are handled. For a kit, discuss preparation of loose parts and the assembly sequence. Do not dismantle a supplied panel or alter its construction simply to follow a general article.

Agree how site cuts and touch-ups will be handled

If trimming or drilling is needed, ask what treatment, sealing and coating steps the supplier requires for those newly exposed surfaces. Record who will carry them out. Keep the paint product names, colour and coating instructions together so a later repair can use the same specification.

Allow the coating manufacturer’s drying and recoating times in the work programme. The colour decision is only one part of the job: access, handling and suitable conditions also need to be planned.

Keep a simple care record

Check the finish regularly using the interval in your supplied instructions. Photograph changes around joints, rail tops and exposed ends, and ask your painter or supplier about worn or damaged areas. If a panel or fixing moves, have the installation assessed; a cosmetic touch-up does not resolve a loose connection.

For the colour choice, read our white painted balustrade guide. For the product specification, browse Karem Woodcraft’s balustrades and handrails, then build your opening schedule in the Balustrade Shop. End and intermediate posts are not included in our panel estimates.
