Timber balustrades for Ballarat projects.
For a Ballarat restoration, an existing turned baluster is best documented from end to end. Show each change in diameter and the length of the plain portions above and below the turning. A close-up of the decorative centre alone can hide differences that become obvious when installed.
Match the turning rather than a generic spindle
Place a ruler alongside the whole member and photograph it square-on. Add the largest and smallest section measurements, the total length and the way it fits into the rails. If the piece is still installed, take safe photographs without removing a protective barrier.
Choose replacements or complete panels
Tell us whether sound rails will remain or whether the whole assembly is being replaced. Loose replacement balusters, a matched handrail and an assembled panel are different supply items. Use separate quantities for each requirement.

Keep the quote linked to a numbered opening sketch and a clear reference photo. If a standard BS5 turned pattern is close, compare its actual profile with the retained timber before deciding that it is the required match.
